This professional development session teaches about the significance of the Second Vatican Council and is intended to link with our new whole school initiative that involves increasing students’ connection with the Sacrament of Liturgy through the implementation of class liturgies that are designed and enacted by the students in a high school context. In order to lead our own students through this process, we will discuss how the changes implemented by the Second Vatican Council increased lay participation in the Church and aimed to nurture a culture of openness that would ensure Catholicism was relevant to people in the modern world. Through this analysis of Vatican II, the intention is that by coming to an understanding of how the Church consciously implemented change to increase relevance and engagement, that we as teachers try to replicate this process for our own students to ensure that their faith experiences in connection with the sacramental life of the Church are rich, engaging and spiritually nourishing.
