CONCLUSION: SUCCESS OF THE COUNCIL
While the success of the changes implemented by the Council 50 years on is still a contentious topic of debate, it has undoubtedly transformed the Church into a much more open and relevant institution that encourages and nourishes the faith pilgrimages of its adherents. Although Catholics no longer “breath in their Catholicism as part of a distinct and walled-around sub-culture” (Price, 2013, p. 184), the Second Vatican Council functioned to invigorate the Church through a thorough exploration and reformation of the ecclesia ad intra and ecclesia ad extra elements of their existence. It is now time for us as leaders of our students’ spiritual journeys to take what we have learnt about the power of reflecting on and rejuvenating our practices and challenging what we already know from the experiences of the Second Vatican Council and implement changes within our own approach to invigorating students’ connection with the Sacrament of the Liturgy.
REFLECTION: Group discussion. What are some examples that you can draw from your current faith experiences that reflect either the success or failure of the Second Vatican Council? How will you apply your new knowledge to the planning of your class liturgy?
